The dove, shown jointly above the waters
at creation and at Jesus' baptism in the River Jordan, represents the
Spirit's active involvement at each. Likewise, the cross, symbolizing
the Son, marks His working at both points of history. The Father, although
not represented in symbolic form here, is also present in our mind's
eye as He speaks at both events. It is a vivid picture of the eternality
of the Triune God.
"In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was
formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
(Genesis
1:1-2)
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all
things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."
(John 1:1-3)

Tree
of Life
60 " x 48"
Acrylic on stretched canvas - 2001
Price: SOLD -
Messer Collection |
We see the Tree of Life (eternal life) in both the opening chapters
of Genesis and the last chapter of Revelation. After the fall, man was
forbidden to eat of its fruit because of being under sin's control.
Here, the Tree is represented with three branches, each with three leaves,
symbolizing the Trinity. Within its trunk is the cross, another "tree
of life" upon whose timbers eternal life was purchased for us.
Through the acceptance of Jesus' shed blood, believers of every people
group are promised to eat freely of the Tree's fruit within a secure
eternity with God.
"On
each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops
of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree
are for the healing of the nations."
(Revelation 22:2)
